Seacom cable 'online in July'
Critical portions of the 15 000km Seacom undersea fibre-optic data cable linking southern and east Africa, Europe and south Asia, and its associated land-based infrastructure, have been completed on schedule. The system is set to go live in July – bringing cheaper international bandwidth for many African countries.
Joburg eyes Lanseria 'aerotropolis'
Lanseria Airport to the north-west of Johannesburg has been earmarked for a potential R7-billion "aerotropolis" development that could see it being integrated with residential, commercial and light manufacturing facilities in a 30km radius over the next 20 years.
West Africa cable 'online by 2011'
The $600-million, 14 000km West Africa Cable System linking southern and western Africa with Europe should be in service by 2011, providing high capacity international bandwidth and further reducing telecoms costs on the continent.
Eskom gets €530m European loan
Eskom has signed a €530-million (about R6.1-billion) loan agreement with seven European banks to help fund construction of the Medupi coal-fired power station near Lephalale in Limpopo province.
