Google goes mobile in Africa

Internet giant Google is targeting Africa's mobile phone users with the introduction, starting in Uganda, of Google SMS, a suite of mobile applications which will allow people to access news, information and advice on health, agriculture, weather, sport and more via SMS (text).

IDC secures €30m French credit line

South Africa's Industrial Development Corporation has had further success in raising funds from foreign credit agencies, the latest being a €30-million (about R334.5-million) credit line from French-based Proparco.

80% of SA's net users shop online

Eighty percent of South Africa's internet users shop online, most buying items like CDs and DVDs and around half spending between R800 and R4 000 per purchase, according to the latest MasterCard survey.

Vodacom trials location-based ads

Cellular operator Vodacom and its retail partners are trying out a new advertising offering – the first of its kind in South Africa – that targets users within a 10km radius of stores carrying advertised products and provides directions if they want to make purchases.
