Trade deficit shrinks dramatically
Posted Wed, 01 Nov 2006
SA's trade deficit decreased dramatically in September, crimping to R175-million last month from a deficit of R5.284-billion the previous month, according to figures released by Customs & Excise on Tuesday. Trade with non-Southern African Customs Union partners had been forecast to decrease to R3.9-billion in September. The figure is also much lower than the R7.746-billion deficit recorded in July — a figure that had economists and analysts worried.
Imports of mineral products came down by R899-million, while original equipment components imports plummeted by R684-million and base metals and articles of base metals came down by R545-million.
Also bringing the imports down, vehicles, aircraft and vessels imports crimped by R476-million and imports of machinery, mechanical appliances and electrical equipment plunged by R641-million.
