Businesses pledged on Friday to donate nearly R20-million to police leadership training over the next two years. "Business Against Crime and the SA Police Service both realise the importance and significance of investing in our leaders. They represent the future of the SAPS," said deputy national police commissioner Mala Singh in Pretoria. She was speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between BAC and the SAPS, formalising their involvement in a support programme for police stations by training constables. The estimated contribution by BAC over the next two years was R19.2-million which would be used to train about 8000 police officers. The officers were to be picked initially from 40 police stations in Gauteng, North West and Mpumalanga, said head of police training commissioner Gary Kruser. Kruser said the SAPS intended over the next few years to enable officers to rise from the rank of constable to sergeant through the Leadership
Development Programme. The LDP had been accredited by the SA Qualifications Authority and included modules such as team development, effective service delivery, creative problem solving and decision-making. Chief executive of BAC Kenny Fihla thanked the SAPS leadership in North West, Gauteng and Mpumalanga for allowing pilot programmes of the LDP to be carried out there before the formal roll-out. "It has indicated the presence of very strong leadership within the SAPS in the North West Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces to agree to be guinea pigs of this programme. The impact assessment by the SAPS will show that the implementation are results of the pilot were successful," Fihla said. The LDP was to be rolled out country-wide over time.
