Govt, business to talk crime
Posted Fri, 03 Nov 2006

Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula and several of his cabinet colleagues in his cluster will meet with the Big Business Working Group on Friday to discuss their joint programme to fight crime.

The meeting in Johannesburg comes only weeks after the two groups agreed on ways to fight crime.

During a meeting in October government and business agreed that the criminal justice system and crime combating plans needed to be overhauled.

"I'm concerned about the fact that crime levels in South Africa are still high.

"It is true that we were able to reduce some categories of crime even drastically, but they still remain high... the project that we have unfolded would... change around the way we work so that we can drastically reduce the levels of crime in South Africa," Nqakula said after that meeting.

Some more practical plans included luring back retired police officers, judges, and magistrates to the criminal justice system to help fight crime.

Hangwani Mulaudzi, Nqakula's spokesperson, said Friday's meeting would focus on practical steps to implement the plans.
