Microsoft founder Bill Gates is to receive an honorary doctorate in philosophy, the University of Stellenbosch announced on Friday.

Spokesperson Martin Viljoen said the exact date of the award had not been fixed, but that it could be at either of the university's scheduled graduation ceremonies in December or March.

Alternatively, a special ceremony might be arranged for the billionaire, as happened when President Thabo Mbeki received an honorary doctorate there in 2004.

The university said in a statement that Gates was reckoned among the most important global entrepreneurs and philanthropists of his time.

"After the presidents of the G8 countries, he is often regarded among the ranks of the most influential people on earth," it said.
