Gautrain to create 6000 jobs
Posted Mon, 22 May 2006
The United Association of SA (Uasa) was "very excited" about the 6000 job opportunities that the Gautrain project would create, the union said on Friday. Uasa was one of the trade unions which signed an industrial agreement with Gautrain contractors on Friday afternoon. The agreement included the conditions of employment and the disciplinary code in respect of workers who will be employed for the project.
Experts estimated that the Gautrain project would create 6000 jobs over 54 months and 70 000 over the next 15 years, in various industries associated with it. "Our members will also benefit from the project, especially through the training workshops that will go hand in hand with the project," said Allan Liebisch, general manager of Uasa's metal, engineering and aerospace division. "It goes without saying that we welcome each new employment opportunity because it contributes to the economy and stability of the country," he said.
