Miners still missing after quake
Posted Thu, 10 Mar 2005
Three injured miners and the missing one remained underground at
North West's Stilfontein area after Wednesday's earthquake, DRD
Gold spokesperson Ilja Graulich said on Thursday.
He said DRDGold initially over-estimated the number of miners
who were trapped underground.
It was initially feared that 42 miners were trapped underground,
but the number later dropped to 40 and now it was 38.
Thirty-three of those who were trapped have been brought to the
surface at 4am, one is dead, one missing and three were injured but
still underground, Graulich said.
Mike Marriott, divisional director of DRDGold's South African
operations, said: "The one fatality is extremely regrettable.
"We shall concentrate on finding the unaccounted for employee as
well as ensure that the remaining injured are brought to surface as
soon as possible," he said.
Marriott said seven of the eight shafts were back working, but
Shaft 5 remained closed until an
investigation into the accident
was completed.
