Diamond bill 'will lead to job losses'
Posted Wed, 12 Oct 2005
The Diamond Amendment Bill could lead to the loss of 8550 jobs and should be delayed to allow for a "proper impact analysis", the Chamber of Mines has warned.
The chamber and diamond miners De Beers and TransHex are set to make presentations before Parliament's portfolio committee on minerals and energy on the proposed bill, Business Day reported on Wednesday.
While the bill may have laudable objectives, it will hurt marginal diamond mines and discriminates against diamond producers compared to other miners.
The controversial bill would oblige diamond producers to hand over a percentage of their diamonds to a state diamond trader, as well as impose a 15 percent duty on all diamond exports.
