Domestic workers to earn more
Posted Tue, 29 Nov 2005
Domestic workers earning the required minimum wage will be
eligible for an increase of 6.7 percent from Thursday, according to
the labour department.
The increase in the minimum wage for domestic workers had been
published in the Government Gazette, department spokesperson Page
Boikanyo said on Monday.
It determined an increase to R997.04 a month of the minimum wage
for domestic workers putting in more than 27-hours a week in urban
areas, and to R706.63 a month for those working less than 27-hours
a week.
In rural areas, the minimum wages are R808.02 for a 27-hour
working week and R573.26 for less than that.
No increase was set for domestic workers already earning more
than the minimum wage, said Boikanyo.
"We're only asking people who pay the minimum wage to increase
their workers' salaries so that they can cope with the increases in
transport costs, food and other things they need to survive," he
said.
The increase amounts to CPIX
of 4.7 percent plus a further two
percent.
The new minimum wages come into effect on Thursday and will
remain in place until the end of November next year when it will
again be revised.
