Posted Wed, 07 Dec 2005
Government and business launched a register of graduates on Tuesday aimed at linking up unemployed youngsters with prospective employers.
The Jobs-and-opportunities-seekers-database already sports 61 000 names, as well as information on available jobs, learnerships, internships and business opportunities.
At a launch ceremony in Pretoria several companies pledged jobs for more than 4000 graduates on the list.
These ranged from jobs as engineers, scientists and mining technicians, to researchers, brewers and project managers.
The database is managed by the government Umsobomvu youth fund.
At a separate meeting of the presidential youth working group president Thabo Mbeki, who chaired the meeting, expressed particular concerns about unemployed graduates.
But he said a number of companies had committed themselves to helping the government to address this challenge.
At the launch of the database deputy president Phumzile
Mlambo-Ngcuka lauded South African swimmer Roland Schoeman for turning down a multi-million rand offer to represent Qatar.
"He is a real a South African. It is a wonderful story, an example of how committed young people are to South Africa," she said.
