Cell C and Virgin announced on Wednesday that they had concluded
agreements to establish a 50/50 joint venture in South Africa to
create a new player in South Africa's mobile telephony market.
In terms of the agreements, the joint venture will utilise the
Virgin Mobile brand and operate as an independent service provider
on the Cell C network.
The joint venture, which is expected to launch during the first
half of 2006, will trade as Virgin Mobile South Africa.
Commenting on the conclusion of the deal, Talaat Laham, chairperson
and CEO of Cell C said, "Cell C constantly seeks to introduce new
products and services into the South African market.
"We are pleased to be bringing an international brand of the
stature of Virgin Mobile to further enhance competition in South
Africa."
Sir Richard Branson commented: "South Africa is a key market for
Virgin and a country that I personally love very much.
"Our partnership
with Cell C will bring a new approach to the
mobile market and will be a refreshing alternative from the bland
offerings of other players.
"I am looking forward to coming to South Africa to launch this
exciting new business next year".
