Posted Fri, 09 Dec 2005
The Gautrain got the go-ahead from cabinet on Wednesday, government spokesperson Joel Netshitenzhe said on Thursday.
Speaking at a post-cabinet meeting press briefing, he said cabinet supported the project that would cost an estimated R20-billion.
"There was a firm commitment that the time frame of this project will not be delayed," he said.
Netshitenzhe said cabinet support included matters such as the integrated ticketing system, an integrated mass transit system, and where possible integration of the Gautrain with Metrorail.
"It should be noted however that while mass transit and integrated systems should form part of the overall objectives of the project, some of these objectives will not be achieved immediately," said Netshitenzhe.
