Industrial incentives to be reviewed
Posted Tue, 11 Jul 2006
The government is to review the industrial incentives plan as it is not delivering as expected, SABC news reported on Tuesday.
Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa said several industries benefited from the government providing them with cheaper electricity and water, lower import and export tariffs and tax cuts, but the country hadn't seen enough returns on this.
Mpahlwa said government wanted "to look at coming up with new approaches" to the issue of incentives that would ensure that there is a closer fit in the dispensing of industrial incentives and the outcomes.
"Our own view is that incentives have just served as a 'rent' really that go towards improving the bottom line without necessarily helping us achieve the outcomes that we designed those incentives for," he said.
