Rural and urban development in areas falling under the eThekwini Municipality will receive a shot in the arm when the city signs an agreement with the European Union (EU) this week.

The agreement will see a whopping R310-million being pumped into the regeneration of Durban's urban and rural areas, as part of a five-year urban development support initiative concentrating on five geographic areas in the eThekwini region.

Areas already earmarked for development are Inanda, Ntuzuma-KwaMashu - known as Ink and Cato Manor -South Durban Basin, Durban's rural areas and the city itself.

eThekwini head of international governance David Walker said the partnership between the municipality and the EU was in line with the government's national urban development strategy.

Walker said the partnership would strengthen the municipality's capacity to provide basic services, and stimulate job creation and income generation through economic development.

"In addition, by encouraging partnerships at area-based level, this initiative will positively deepen the democratic process," Walker said.
