The transformation of higher education in South Africa received a shot in the arm when Finance Minister Trevor Manuel allocated an extra R1-billion for the process in his 2004/05 Budget.

The increase brings the total of financial resources allocated for the restructuring of higher education to R1.8-billion.

Manuel added that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme will receive an additional R50-million in the 2006/07 financial year.

The education department's will receive an addition of R160-million for operational costs over the medium term, including R60-million for implementing the revised national curriculum and R50-million for writing and implementing the new further education and training curriculum.

Manuel also announced that the Primary School Nutrition Programme, which has been run by the health department, will become the responsibility of the education department from 1 April.
