SA, Angola agreements 'on track'
15 August 2003
South Africa is satisfied with its working relations with the Angolan government, and aims to improve these further for the benefit of the southern African region.
Kingsley Mamabolo, the deputy director-general for African affairs in the foreign affairs department, told Parliament on Wednesday that, in November 2000, the two countries had signed an agreement establishing a joint commission of cooperation during a visit to Luanda by Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
The first session of the commission, co-chaired by the foreign affairs ministers of the two countries, took place in Pretoria in February this year, followed by another session in Luanda in July.
Mamabolo said various agreements were in the process of being concluded, including agreements on safety and security, minerals and energy, telecommunications and postal services, transport, agriculture, and electricity supply.
"We now have representative missions in each
country, and we are working on a general agreement on cooperation in the economic, scientific, technical and cultural fields," Mamabolo said, added that an agreement covering requirements for visas and official passports would also be concluded.
