Exploring SA's unique Winescape

7 April 2004

Winescape is a new quarterly magazine that aims to entice international visitors to the country's winelands by capturing - in stories and photographs by top travel journalists - the unique flavour of wine travel in South Africa.

The quarterly publication seeks "to capture the flavour of wine travel in South Africa, to make coming here an irresistible option", said Judy Brower, the advertising director of the magazine. "It is a showcase of our winelands and our wines, of our restaurants and cafes, our hotels and bed and breakfasts, for all ages and all incomes."

Winescape will be distributed internationally by Wines of South Africa (WOSA).

The publication features superb pictures by photographers such as Graeme Robinson, Geoff Spiby, Alain Proust, Keith Phillips, Craig Foster and Emma Borg. The text is courtesy of editor and travel editor Lesley Beake, food editor Jos Baker and wine editor Neil Pendock.

"Wine is one of our fastest-growing exports and is a nugget of excellence in our agricultural economy", Proudly South African chief executive Martin Feinstein said at the launch in Constantia, Cape Town last month. "This liquid gold creates jobs, grows our economy and attracts tourists.

"Winescape is an important new publication because it will highlight quality in the industry and direct visitors and locals alike to our estates and the many tourist attractions around them."

Winescape will release 10 000 copies through WOSA offices in the UK, US, Canada, Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany and Japan, and at international wine shows.

Virgin Wines will send 15 000 copies out to their customers in the UK, while a further 5 000 will be available locally through selected tourism offices, hotels and subscriptions.

The publication is a joint venture between Lesley Beake and Judy Brower, both of whom have been involved in promoting South African wine for the past eight years.
