Mindset Network
A far-reaching project aimed at uplifting all South Africans through better education, Mindset delivers free educational material via satellite broadcasts, with supporting multimedia material in print and on the internet. Kicks off with Activate, an education channel for the last three years of high school, rolling out full curriculum support for grades 10, 11 and 12 in maths, science and biology. Aimed at high school students, this site provides lesson notes, a virtual laboratory for experiments in physics, chemistry, biology and geography and an electronic library with full texts of Shakespeare’s plays and other set works.
M-Web Learning
Good site for school-goers of all ages – offers relevant information for learners from Grade R (reception year) to Grade 12. Offers help with projects, has online tutors to answer grade 12 problems, and carries a list of past exam papers.
South African History Online
Excellent, user-friendly site offering alternative perspectives of history, focusing on untold stories and giving learners a chance to construct their own oral histories. The Classroom section has comprehensive content for grades 4 -
12. There's also plenty of information for teachers, and a well-illustrated section on arts and culture. More about SA History Online
Internet Biology Education Project
The University of the Western Cape's botany department, the Western Cape Schools Network and the Western Cape education department collaborate to improve the teaching and learning of biology with online assistance. The site hosts mailing lists and newsgroups, and contains plenty of learning and teaching materials.
Biodiversity Explorer
Whether you're looking for information on a seaslug named after Nelson Mandela or advice on how to deal with fig tree-eating beetles, the information-packed Biodiversity Explorer website, hosted by Iziko Museums of Cape Town, will answer all your questions - and a lot more. Science in Africa
Africa's first online popular science magazine aims to promote awareness of science conducted in Africa, to provide science teachers with locally relevant resources, to give information on health and science issues directly affecting society, and more.

General educational resources
SA Agency for Science & Technology Advancement
Saasta, part of the National Research Foundation, aims to promote public understanding and awareness of science and technology, to nurture a new relationship between science
and society, and to make science accessible and exciting to all South Africans.
Look out for Saasta's brand new science magazine for all young (and young at heart) South Africans, covering cool science topics from viruses to the universe and lots in between, and showcasing exciting work by SA's own science boffins. The magazine will incorporate both Archimedes and EasyScience, and will be published by middle October 2003.
The Teacher
Online version of the Mail and Guardian's monthly newspaper for teachers. Contains news and features on topical issues, educational resources, opinions, letters and advice.
Sunday Times Education
Has an online version of ReadRight, the Sunday Times' educational supplement
containing news, features and learning materials for all grades. Also carries an archive of educational features, including the Top Schools series, and a database of schools.
SABC Education
Homepage of the SA Broadcasting Corporation's education division. User-friendly site providing information on the SABC's various educational programmes, plus details on school competitions, school TV, games and colouring-in exercises for kids.
School search engines
SchoolNet SA
Promotes learning and teaching through communications technologies. Made up of provincial school networks. The site hosts Electronic Schoolbook, a province-by-province list of schools' e-mail addresses and websites, where they exist. Also carries a list of non-South African schools, and links to universities and technikons.
SA School Directory
Plenty of school news and education-related information, as well as contact details for schools around the country. Also hosts Rainbow Kids, a Western Cape directory of pre-schools, au pairs, day mothers, etc.
Schoolguide.co.za
Aims to facilitate communication among education role players. Provides education information, news and links. Schoolguide offers a jobs service for teachers who can post their cv's on line. Also features a Daily Top 8 list of schools, with useful details on each school. However, its search engine for schools around the country is not very comprehensive.
