Higher education mergers named

Education Minister Kader Asmal has announced the new names of all the institutions of higher learning that will merge or be incorporated into others as part of the restructuring process.

The process was approved by Cabinet in November 2002, and Asmal requested the councils of the merging institutions to provide him with nominations to the interim councils, proposals for names for the new institutions, preferred dates of implementation, and addresses of the new institutions.

Asmal said this week that the following mergers have been approved to take effect from 1 January 2004:

  • The University of Potchefstroom, University of North West and the Sebokeng campus of Vista University will become North West University. Robinson Ramaite will serve as chairman of the interim council.

  • Pretoria Technikon, Technikon Northern Gauteng and North West Technikon will become the Tshwane University of Technology. Jairam Reddy will serve as chairman of the interim council.

  • Unisa, Technikon SA and the Vista University Distance Education Centre will become the University of South Africa. Matthews Phosa will serve as chairman of the interim council.
The following incorporations will also take effect in January 2004:
  • The Mamelodi campus of Vista University will become part of Pretoria University.
  • The Bloemfontein campus of Vista University will become part of the University of the Free State.
  • The Welkom campus of Vista University will become part of the Technikon Free State.
  • The Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University will become part of the University of Port Elizabeth.
  • The East Rand and Soweto campuses of Vista University will become part of Rand Afrikaans University.
  • The dental faculty of the University of Stellenbosch will become part of the University of the Western Cape.
  • The East London campus of Rhodes University will become part of the University of Fort Hare.
Asmal added that the merger of the University of Natal and the University of Durban Westville will go ahead as planned on 1 January 2004. However, this will be gazetted only after he he has received the report of the independent assessor, Bongani Khumalo, who has been appointed to investigate matters relating to governance and management at the University of Durban Westville.

The following mergers have been approved for 1 January 2005:

  • The University of Port Elizabeth and Port Elizabeth Technikon (including the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University) will become the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Judge Fikile Bam will serve as chairman of the interim council.

  • The Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon will become the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Stuart Saunders will serve as chairman of the interim council.

  • Rand Afrikaans University and Techikon Witwatersrand (including the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University) will become the University of Johannesburg. Ihron Rensburg will serve as chairman of the interim council.

  • The University of the Transkei, Border Technikon and Eastern Cape Technikon will become the Eastern Cape University of Technology. Patrick FitzGerald will serve as chairman of the interim council.

  • Medunsa and the University of the North will become the University of Limpopo. Job Mokgoro will serve as chairman of the interim council.
