E Cape's 'turn-around' govt
Mgcobo Ngxukumeshe

3 May 2004

Newly inaugurated Eastern Cape Premier Nosimo Balindlela says her executive council will work hard over the next five years to improve the lives of people in the province.

Balindlela has taken over as premier from Makhenkesi Stofile, who has been appointed to President Thabo Mbeki's Cabinet as sports and recreation minister.

Speaking at the provincial legislature in Bisho shortly before announcing the new provincial cabinet last week, Balindlela vowed to push ahead with poverty alleviation programmes.

She also vowed to tackle corruption and fraud in the province, as well as to focus on capacity building, job creation and the development of small businesses in order to turn around one of the country's poorest provinces.

The new executive council includes Thobile Mhlahlo (safety and security), Qugile Nkwinpi (local government), Bevan Goqwana (health), Neo Moerane-Mamase (social development), Sam Kwelita (public works), Mkhangela Matomela (education), and Max Mamase (agriculture).

Enoch Godongwana will be in charge of the economic affairs portfolio, while Andrew de Wet takes over environment and tourism affairs.
