KZN decides on one capital

KwaZulu-Natal Premier S'bu Ndebele has declared the city of Pietermaritzburg as both the legislative and administrative capital of the province.
Previously, Ulundi was the administrative capital and the venue for provincial executive council meetings, while Pietermaritzburg was only the legislative capital.
The declaration of Pietermaritzburg as the administrative capital means that all departments will have to move from Ulundi to the city. Up until now, departments have had their headquarters scattered across Ulundi, Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
"The executive council will now meet in Pietermaritzburg", Ndebele said last week, adding that the move would cut down on travelling costs for MECs.
Ndebele said, however, that Ulundi would be the venue for a variety of government business, such as workshops, and assured civil servants based in Ulundi that their jobs were safe.
"There will be no harassment of government workers on the
basis of their political affiliation", Ndebele said. "All that I want is a commitment to serve the people of the province impartially, regardless of political affiliation."
Several regional offices of provincial departments, serving the hinterlands of the province, are based in Ulundi.
