Mpumalanga: 'foundations laid'
Wilson Matsawela

4 May 2004

Mpumalanga Premier Sampson Phathakge "Thabang" Makwetla, inaugurated as the province's new leader last week, has praised his predecessors, Mathews Phosa and Ndaweni Mahlangu, for the foundations they laid for socio-economic development in the province.

Speaking after his inauguration in Nelspruit, Makwetla said the new leadership could now focus on economic growth, as the previous provincial governments had sorted out the political and financial problems that had bedevilled Mpumalanga.

Makwetla - previously MEC for safety and security in the province - praised Phosa for integrating and rationalising the province's numerous administrations, including the former homelands of KwaNdebele, KwaNgwane and parts of Lebowa and the old Eastern Transvaal.

"It is my belief that we can fly now that Mr Ndaweni Mahlangu has fixed the financial nightmare in the province", Makwetla added.

Over the next five years, he said, the government would work hard to promote the economic development of the province and to improve the conditions of life of its people.
