When I was young, I used to read a lot and I read anything that was printed. There were books and newspapers that were forbiden under the colonial rule in Congo, my country of origin. Somehow though, I got hold of one of the forbidden French newspapers in which there was an article about Apartheid and the African National Congress.
It was probably around 1959 and the Congo was to become independant on June 30, 1960. Since we did not know much about political parties in Congo, I was surprised and amazed that Blacks in South Africa had a political party, the African National Congress, existing since 1912! From that point on, I became curious about the history of South Africa and when I learned that Mandela went to jail for defending the actions of the African National Congress, he became my hero and has been since. I have read twice the "Long Walk To Freedom" and it has inspired me profoundly. I have resolved to conduct my life in the model of the true African Man that Mandela has shown to the world. I want just to say to my big brother on his 85th birthday: Thank you for showing us the road to freedom, and may our ancestors give you a few more years to make it to 100 among us!
