Business boost for police training
22 May 2006
South African businesses will donate nearly R20-million to police leadership training over the next two years.
This was revealed on Friday when Business Against Crime signed a memorandum of understanding with the South African Police Service (SAPS) formalising their involvement in a support programme for the country's police stations.
Business Against Crime will contribute an estimated R19.2-million for the training about 8 000 police officers over the next two years.
The Leadership Development Programme, developed by Anglo American's Maccauvlei Training Centre, will be piloted in 120 priority police stations in Gauteng, North West and Mpumalanga provinces.
The programme covers areas such as self management, creative problem-solving and decision-making, relationship management, team development, leadership and motivation, effective service delivery as well as planning, organisation and control.
Business Against Crime has long been involved in a public-private partnership with the government to tackle crime in the country.
Among its initiatives was the installation of closed-circuit TV surveillance cameras in Johannesburg's central business district (CBD) following the success of a similar scheme in Cape Town.
Within 18 months of the launch of the Joburg project, street crime in the city's CBD had dropped by 80%.
