The South African Revenue Service (Sars) has extended its branch office hours ahead of the country's 20 November tax filing deadline.

20 November is the deadline for electronic submission of tax returns. The 18 November deadline for manual submissions has just passed. Provisional taxpayers have until 28 February 2010 to submit their returns.

Sars branches will be open from 7am to 6pm until Friday, giving taxpayers an extra three hours each day to receive free assistance, Sars said in a statement on Monday.

Some branches would remain open until 7pm, depending on volumes.

Sars' contact centre – 0800 00 72 77 – has extended its operating hours to 8pm.

To date, Sars said it had received three-million returns, nearly 700 000 more compared to the same period last year.
