Fast foods, takeaways gain favour

15 January 2010

Total income for food and beverages decreased for October 2009, Statistics South Africa said on Thursday.

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry for October 2009 decreased by 0.9% compared with October 2008, the Pretoria-based agency said.

The decrease was mainly due to a decrease in income from food sales (-0.9% and contributing -0.8 of a percentage point).

The main contributors to the decrease of 0.9% were restaurants and coffee shops (-3.6% and contributing -2.0 percentage points) and other catering services (-22.8% and contributing -1.1 percentage points).

However, these decreases were partly counteracted by an increase in income for takeaway and fast-food outlets (10.4% and contributing 2.3 percentage points), Statistics SA said.
