The Gauteng government is set to recall 427 000 unlicensed vehicles in the province, and has urged the vehicle owners to contact the government on special call lines for advice and assistance.

Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg on Thursday, provincial community safety minister Khabisi Mosunkutu said an E-Natis audit showed that of the 3.8-million vehicles on the province's roads, 427 000 are unlicensed.

"This figure includes vehicles whose roadworthy licences are in arrears," Mosunkutu said.

"While we contemplate culprits as defaulters with the credit bureau, we urge defaulting motorists to contact us for assistance."

Special call lines have been set up to assist motorists who suspect they might be in arrears. Motorists can call 011-689-3791 or 011-689-3636 to see whether their vehicles are licensed or not.

Alternatively, they can visit the websites of the provincial Department of Public Transport or Department of Community Safety.

The government plans to send out letters informing motorists that their vehicles will be recalled.

These motorists will then have to pay the relevant licensing fees, and their cars will have to undergo new roadworthy tests.
