Rand firmer ahead of weekend

The rand was firmer against major currencies in noon trade on Friday ahead of the weekend. The rand increased sharply on Thursday after the European Central Bank's decision to hike interest rates by 50 basis points.

At 12.12pm the local unit added 0.18 percent against the greenback and was bid at 7.7158 from its previous close of 7.7320.

The rand jumped 0.40 percent against the euro and was bid at 12.1075 from its previous close of 12.1645.

Against sterling the rand gained 0.13 percent and was bid at 15.3174 from its previous close of 15.3495.

Gold shed 0.09 percent and was quoted $931.80 a troy ounce.
