JSE ends day in the red

The JSE ended a dull day in the red on Monday as profit taking dragged the local bourse down while there was little activity to provide some direction.

The JSE's all share index dropped 0.81 percent and closed at 28 032.870 points.

Resources pulled back 1.69 percent, the gold mining index lost 1.5 percent while the platinum mining index eased 0.40 percent.

Banks and financials retreated 0.76 percent and 0.62 percent respectively while industrials closed almost flat (-0.02 percent).

Resources heavyweight, Anglo American pulled back 2.15 percent to 298.35 rand while rival BHP Billiton withdrew 2.38 percent to 242 rand. Synthetics giant, Sasol lost 1.50 rand to 283.50 rand.

Among gold miners, Anglogold Ashanti eased two rand to 278 rand, Gold Fields retreated 2.1 percent to 88.45 rand while Harmony dropped 2.39 percent to 70.75 rand.

Among platinum miners, Angloplat bucked the weaker trend lifting 1.01 rand to 700.01 rand however Impala Platinum shed 1.01 rand to 197 rand, Northam tumbled 3.2 percent to 44.99 rand while Lonmin declined 1.8 percent to 219.50 rand.

Kumba Iron Ore dropped 1.28 percent to 347.99 rand however Exxaro jumped 2.66 percent to 118.31 rand.

Among industrials, British American Tobacco lost 1.73 percent to 246.01 rand while brewer SABMiller edged down 44 cents to 210.50 rand.

Investment holding company Primeserv Group earlier reported a dip in its full year diluted headline earnings per share (HEPS) to 10.51 cents from 15.04 cents. The group's share price rallied 18.24 percent to 45 cents.

Furniture retailer Lewis pulled back 2.37 percent to 57.32 rand while Massmart dropped two percent to 101.80 rand.

Among construction groups, WBH Ovcon slumped 2.96 percent to 114.50 rand, Group Five dropped 1.7 percent to 34.65 rand however Aveng edged up 37 cents to 40.15 rand.

Media group Naspers gained 2.55 rand to 304.05 rand.

Banking giant, Standard Bank retreated 1.7 percent to 112.55 rand however Nedbank rose 61 cents to 128.61 rand while Absa climbed 40 cents to 138 rand.
