JSE plummets before close

The JSE plummeted before the close on Friday, ending in the red for the sixth straight day. Weak overseas sentiment and a poor start on Wall Street were the main culprits.
By close the JSE's all share index tumbled 2.95 percent and closed at 25 416.670 points.
Resources plummeted 4.25 percent, the platinum mining index dropped 2.46 percent while the gold mining index shed 0.41 percent.
Industrials withdrew 2.29 percent, financials pulled back 1.20 percent while banks retreated 0.72 percent.
Resources heavyweight Anglo American plummeted 5.92 percent to 325.97 rand while rival BHP Billiton plunged 5.41 percent to 200.82 rand. Petrochemicals group Sasol withdrew 1.97 percent to 373 rand.
Among gold counters, AngloGold Ashanti shed 120 cents to 187 rand but Harmony edged up 20 cents to 61 rand.
Among platinum miners, Anglo Platinum dropped 2.48 percent to 825 rand while Impala Platinum withdrew 2.17 percent to 196 rand.
Steel maker ArcelorMittal slumped 5.13 percent to 156.98 rand.
Brewer SABMiller retreated 2.09 percent to 164 rand, Richemont tumbled 4.05 percent to 44.54 rand while Tiger Brands eased 99 cents to 138 rand.
Among banking stocks, Standard Bank slipped 29 cents to 90.40 rand, Nedbank lost 1.45 percent to 102 rand while Absa weakened 1.68 percent to 108.48 rand.
