President Jacob Zuma officially appointed four new judges to South Africa's Constitutional Court on Sunday.

The four, Sisi Khampepe, Chris Jafta, Johan Froneman and Moegeng Moegeng, were among seven judges short-listed for the posts by the country's Judicial Service Commission. They were expected to take up their posts on Monday.

They replace retiring judges Albie Sachs, Kate O'Regan and Yvonne Mokgoro – the last of the Constitutional Court judges appointed by South Africa's first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela.

Upholding the rule of law

Zuma paid tribute to the outgoing justices for their "selfless contribution to the legal fraternity, the development of South Africa's constitutional democracy, and the upholding of the rule of law.

"As a nation we are indeed eternally grateful at their dedication and leadership of such an important institution of our democracy," Zuma said.

"It is our hope that as the honourable justices retire and take time to reflect on their years on the bench, we can still draw guidance from their wisdom and experience on the many challenges that still face our young democracy."

South Africa's new Chief Justice

Earlier this month, Zuma announced that Constitutional Court Judge Sandile Ngcobo would take over the reins as South Africa's Chief Justice from the retiring Pius Langa – an appointment since welcomed by several political parties as well as the Law Society of South Africa.

"Justice Ngcobo brings over 35 years of practice and experience both here and abroad," he said at the announcement. "It is his track record in promoting and protecting human rights that earned the respect [of his peers]."
