The Gauteng Homemakers Expo, South Africa's largest home improvement exhibition, takes place at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg from 18 to 21 February, with some exciting new features on offer this year.
One of the main feature areas will be Green Living where products and services designed to help people live "green" will be exhibited, from solar power to a wide variety of eco-friendly products.
There will also be a functional area filled with infotainment, which will show visitors how they can go green.
Décor on a Budget
Taking into account the economy, Décor on a Budget will show that stylish and beautiful rooms need not break the bank.
Participating decorators will be a given a figurative budget of R20 000 in which they need to decorate a living area, thus demonstrating that beautiful furniture and décor can be achieved on a budget.
Various decorating styles will be demonstrated to provide show-goers with inspiration and to fire up their imagination.
The organisers say the "re" in recession can be viewed in a positive light. They say design has become more real in respect of focusing on down-to-earth, feet-on-the-ground styling. Reduce, they say, is about a move away from the indulgent, show-it-off style of the last decade, and reconnect refers to products and services that reflect the individual.
Enduring styles
The exhibits will show styles that are enduring and the focus will be on flowing lines, as opposed to boxy furniture. The in-colours, say the organisers, are blues, greens and greys.
Other aspects that will be shown include feature walls, lighting, and curtaining.
Future of Design will provide young artists with the opportunity to exhibit designs that will be fresh and modern, including unique products or items that could be used in and around the home.
Kitchens are, of course, one of the most important areas of a house and the Kitchen Specialist Association will display the latest in kitchen design.
Deli and wine tasting
Kitchens are about food and so, too, will be the Deli and Wine Tasting area, which is a new addition to the Homemakers Expo. It is sure to be a popular place.
It will be an area where visitors can take a break and enjoy wine tasting, as well as olives, cheeses, sushi and other mouth-watering treats. Visitors will also be able to purchase the sumptuous fare on offer.
Later in the year, at the beginning of September, the Homemakers Expo will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
In October, it will be on at the Durban Exhibition Centre.
