The first World Human Rights Moot Court Competition, part of the United Nations' celebration of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, will be staged in South Africa on 9 December 2009. All law faculties in the world are invited to participate.

The theme of the problem to be argued at the moot, taking place at the University of Pretoria, will be "discrimination".

The languages to be used for the event will be English and French, and participation is open to students from any institution of higher learning in the world who are undertaking a first degree in law.

While participation is not restricted to law students, it is expected that in most cases the teams participating in the event will comprised students of law.

The moot is being organised with the support of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.

Pillay will be one of the presiding judges in the final rounds of the moot, along with judges from international tribunals and bodies such as the different regional human rights courts and UN human rights treaty bodies. Representatives from emerging human rights bodies such as ASEAN will also be invited.
