23 September 2008

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka has resigned as Deputy President of South Africa - and congratulated Minister in the Presidency Kgalema Monthlante on his nomination as caretaker President following the resignation of Thabo Mbeki on Sunday.

Mlambo-Ngcuka has also resigned as Member of Parliament, the Presidency said in a statement on Tuesday.

"In resigning, the Deputy President believes that there is merit in affording the new President an opportunity to choose his or her deputy in the best interest of work within the Presidency," the Presidency said.

"The Deputy President has also cited personal reasons for her resignation, and has indicated her commitment to a smooth handover and to assisting the new team should the need arise."

Mlambo-Ngcuka thanked Mbeki and the African National Congress for the opportunity afforded her to serve the country, and thanked the people of South Africa for the support and kindness shown her in the performance of her duties.

"Having had an opportunity to serve first as a deputy minister, minister and now Deputy President, I have been privileged to be part of the economic and social transformation of this country," Mlambo-Ngcuka said.

"I hope in a small way that I have contributed towards the vision of a better life for all. I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve the ANC government, and will always be of service to the people of South Africa."
