SA dancers aim high at world champs

21 November 2012

After surprising with impressive results in 2011, including four world titles, a 63-strong South African team will be aiming high at the 2012 International Dance Organisation (IDO) Show Dance World Championships in Riesa, Germany from 26 November to 1 December.

The IDO is a world dance and dancesport federation with a membership of over 90 nations, representing more than 250 000 dancers from six continents.

Dancers aged from 10 to adult will compete in 15 categories for international honours at the global event, which saw South Africa collect four gold and four bronze medals to finish second overall behind Russia last year.

'A big impact'

"South African dancers really created a big impact last year and we've kept that focus and momentum for this year's World Champs," said Wendy Quarmby, head coach of the national team, said in a statement.

"The standard is obviously exceptionally high, but we're confident that our dancers have the talent and desire and are appropriately trained to challenge for world titles once again, in a variety of categories.

"We also have another year of experience, which helps and our support structure for the World Champs has been improved too," Quarmby added.

Current world champions

The South African adult formation team and adult small group are the current world champions and are likely to face some stiff competition in their effort to defend those titles, with 26 formation teams competing and 32 small groups.

The largest category is the solo female junior (12-15 years) section with 53 qualifiers.

The full spread of categories is solo male, solo female, duos, small groups and formations in the following age groups: Children (Under 12), Junior (12-15 years) and Adult (16 and older).

There will be a live streaming online broadcast of the event. For more information, visit or
