Easter in Durban: what a rush!
19 March 2008
Adrenaline junkies in need of a rush are in for their annual Easter treat as Durban beachfront, for the sixth year running, hosts the immensely popular Vodacom Easter Adrenaline Beach Festival from 21 to 23 March.
Well over 240 000 beachgoers flocked to North Beach, the Skate Park, Bay Beach and Bay Lawns for the 2007 Vodacom Easter Adrenaline, and this year organisers are hoping to top that figure.
The festival, which has been running since 2003, uses a unique combination of adrenaline sports and lifestyle exhibitions to create an exciting spectacle on the KZN Easter calendar. From motorbike stunts to freestyle jet-ski action, there will be a visual feast to get all beachgoers pulses racing.
Pro Junior surfing
For the first time ever, a massive surfing event has been added to the line-up, and it is bound to be a highlight of the festival; Oakley will be staging the richest Pro Junior surfing event ever
held in South Africa at New Pier from 21 to 23 March.
The Oakley Pro Junior carries an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International grade two Pro Junior rating and boasts a total prize purse of US$10 0000 (R70 000), with $2 500 (R17 500) going to the winner.
The first-year event is the second of six stops on the 2008 Oakley Pro Junior World Tour, which kicks off in Australia in February before moving to South Africa in March. Thereafter it travels to California, Brazil, France and Japan.
Secret location
As part of the prizes on offer at the various World Tour events, the top two surfers from each country will be flown to an exotic, secret location in the South Pacific.
Sanctioned by ASP International, the Oakley Pro Junior offers a world-class field of 96 surfers, aged 20 years and under, a chance to compete at one of South Africa's best breaks. All of SA's top Pro Junior surfers, coupled with a few international team riders, are expected to enter.
Jet ski action
To complement the world-class surfing action, the Vodacom Freestyle Jet-Ski displays promise breathtaking action from top pilots.
Beachgoers can expect to see a frenzy of jet-skiers aiming for maximum altitude as they jump waves, while also mixing in moves like no-hand-backflips, barrel rolls, and cliff hangers among some powerful wave riding.
South Africa's leading freestyle motocross (FMX) crew will be taking over Durban's airspace, pushing the envelope of what's possible during their shows, as they launch tricks reaching heights of over three-and-a-half storeys high.
In addition, the Vodacom Skate Park will be packed to capacity with some of the country's finest skaters and BMX pros.
