Jordy Smith: SA surfer of the year
18 February 2008Jordy Smith was named South African Surfer of the Year for the second consecutive year at the South African Surfing Awards ceremony at the International Convention Centre in Durban on Saturday night.
The event was presented by Zigzag Magazine in association with Paarl Web, Surfing South Africa and the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Africa.
Honouring best performances
The South African Surfing Awards were held to honour the best surfers' performances over the last 12 months, both locally and on the international ASP World Qualifying Series and ASP World Championship Tour.
The Surf Industry Cup took place at Dairy Beach earlier in the day as a preamble to the awards evening.
The unique contest format consisted of nine surf industry teams competing in a tag team event. The winning team claimed a trophy, as well as a full page colour advert in the latest Zigzag as bragging rights.
Silent auction
In addition, a silent auction was held, with boards donated by Kelly Slater, Travis Logie, Jordy Smith (WQS board) and Grant "Twiggy" Baker (big wave board from Dungeons).
All proceeds from the Surf Industry Cup and silent auction will be put towards building a library for a school near Umfazazana on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, which is in close proximity to a popular secret surf spot known only as "the spot".
One of the highlights of the evening was the preview of Shaun Tomson's new surf film Busting Down the Door, which is a documentary profiling surfers from the 1970s to the present.
The film pays tribute to surfers that have revolutionized or raised the level of surfing and features a handful of South Africans.
