Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula unveiled 10 mobile units at a fully packed stadium in King William's town last weekend, saying it was an attempt to bring services closer to the people, especially those living in rural areas.
The units are fully equipped to issue various certificates and documents on the spot, including birth, marriage and death registrations, IDs and passport applications.
Fully computerised and equipped with satellite connectivity, the units are capable of providing real-time processing of applications.
The 10 units were the first of almost 70 that will be ready by the end of June. Mapisa-Nqakula said the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo would receive additional units because of their size and rural nature.
"The services on wheels are fully equipped to provide services to clients in remote areas, and to areas insufficiently covered by the existing home affairs offices," the minister said.
It
is hoped the move will alleviate long queues at home affairs offices around the country, and shorten the long distances people travel to access these services.
