Mining houses, the government and other stakeholders are investing in improving socio- economic conditions in distressed mining towns and rural labour-sending areas. Among the R18- mbillion worth of interventions, are housing, health care and job creation initiatives.

South Africa sells Vodacom stake to fund Eskom

Cash from the sale of the state's 13.91% stake in Vodacom to the Public Investment Corporation, which acts for the Government Employees Pension Fund will finance the multibillion-rand allocation to Eskom. The deal is believed to be worth nearly R29-billion.


South Africa sets aside R1.5bn for miners

Mineworkers are at high risk of contracting lung diseases such as silicosis, pulmonary tuberculosis and lung cancer. Compensation has been slow in coming, but this should pick up pace with the launch of Project Ku-Riha, set up to process compensation claims speedily.
