South Africa's new police watchdog

The new Independent Police Investigative Directorate will focus more on tackling corruption and human rights abuses involving the police than its predecessor, while making itself more accessible to the public, says the unit's director.

Call for recognition of sign language

The National Institute for the Deaf, making a submission during public hearings on the South African Language Bill, called for sign language to be recognised as one of the country's official languages.

'Mini-skirt' harassment condemned

The government has condemned the incident in which a group of men harassed two teenagers near Johannesburg's Noord Street Taxi Rank, apparently because one of them was wearing a mini-skirt.
