Comair Limited, operator of low-cost airline kulula.com and the British Airways franchise in South Africa, is again expanding its African network, and will soon be offering five return flights a week between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

British Airways will be operating the new route from 2 November, and the flights will also be integrated and sold through the kulula.com distribution network.

"We look forward to including Dar es Salaam in our growing regional network," Comair network development manager Stuart Cochrane said in a statement last month.

"The growth of this network is part of our ongoing commitment to the South African government's airlift strategy, which aims to improve access to and from South Africa for both business and tourism."

Daily service on the cards

Comair will commence with five return flights per week, the full allocation granted to it by the International Air Services Licensing Council. However, Cochrane said Comair's intention would be to grow this route to a daily service as soon as possible.

Cochrane said the introduction of additional flights to Dar es Salaam would bring a much-needed alternative service – and competitive pricing – to a market that was currently only serviced by one airline operator.

"Tanzania is a beautiful country and is rapidly becoming a desirable business and tourist destination," he said. "We are looking forward to developing this route as a successful addition to our network."
