    In the small town of Nieu-Bethesda - home also to the Owl House, where outsider artist Helen Martens constructed a garden of figuratve scultures with the aid of Koos Malgas - the Ibis Art Centre mounts exhibitions of contemporary art including the !Xoe biennial exhibition of site-specific sculpture.

    This provincial gallery houses an important collection of historical Eastern Cape art, including works by the late Gerard Sekoto.

    NELSON MANDELA METROPOLITAN ART MUSEUM

    Collections include of South African art, particularly from the Eastern Cape, British art, international printmaking and Oriental art, including Indian miniatures and Chinese textiles. There is an active programme of temporary exhibitions.

    THE OWL HOUSE MUSEUM
    River Street, Nieu-Bethesda

    Over a period of about 12 years in the mid-20th century, Helen Martins and Koos Malgas created from her imaginings the hundreds of sculptures and relief figures that crowd the Camel Yard and cover the walls of the Owl House. Her favourite animals, owls and camels, predominate, but all manner of real and fantastical beings are to be found.

    RON BELLING ART GALLERY

    Ron Belling was South Africa's foremost aviation artists who produced 1 650 paintings during his lifetime, of which 500 are aviation subjects. Many of these are exhibited at the Gutsche Family Investment, Ron Belling Art Gallery, dedicated to his memory in Port Elizabeth.

    WALTER BATTISS GALLERY
    45 Paulet Street, Somerset East

    In an official ceremony held in front of the white-gabled house in Paulet Street, Somerset East, in September 1981, Walter Battiss bequeathed his collection of his own art works to "the people of Somerset East and South Africa". The two-storied house with its long, shaded verandah is a familiar landmark in the small Karoo town. The Walter Battiss art gallery was originally built in 1818 and served as an officers’ mess on Somerset Farm.

    JOHANNES STEGMANN ART GALLERY

    Based at Free State University of the Free State, the gallery's permanent collection includes art by old South African masters (dating as far back as 1929) alongside a specialised collection of work by the Bloemfontein group and artists from Thaba'nchu and other surrounding towns. The annual Absa L'Atelier Regional Selection show and student exhibition are hosted by the gallery.

    OLIEWENHUIS ART MUSEUM

    As a satellite of the National Museum in Bloemfontein, the Oliewenhuis concentrates solely on South African art ranging from the old masters to contemporary paintings, graphics and sculpture. The permanent collection houses works by David Brown, Justinus Khoalibe, Winston Saoli, Ben Botma, Paul Emmanuel, Leora Farber and many others.

    POLOKWANE ART MUSEUM

    The museum concentrates on paintings and sculptures by artists from Limpopo. Its permanent collection has been accrued through donations by local artists, including the prominent Jack Botes.

    TZANEEN MUSEUM

    The museum houses a notable collection of Tsonga and North Sotho ethnological artifacts and art, including the world's largest collection of pole carvings from the region. Among the objects are the royal drums of the famous rain queen Modjadji. Sculptures by local artists also form part of the permanent collection.

    DUGGAN CRONIN GALLERY

    Adjacent to the historical McGregor Museum, this gallery holds a collection of early photographs of Africans by Duggan Cronin, an Irish photographer who arrived in Kimberley in 1897. Shot between 1919 and 1939, some of the traditional tribal rites depicted can never be photographed again. The gallery also displays African arts and crafts and a number of rock paintings (originals).
