1 December 2006

Stellenbosch restaurant Terroir took South Africa's top gastronomic honour when it was named the Eat Out Johnnie Walker Restaurant of the Year 2006, while culinary trendsetter George Jardine of Jardine restaurant in Cape Town won the Chef of the Year title.

Talented aspirant chef Mkhanyisela Kapa was the recipient of the first Woolworths Taste Bursary Award.

The Eat Out awards ceremony, held in Cape Town on Sunday, also marked the launch of the 2007 edition of Eat Out, South Africa’s longest-standing annual restaurant guide, as well as the unveiling of the Eat Out Johnnie Walker Top 10 restaurants in the country.

The Top 10 were chosen by judges Peter Goffe-Wood, Letitia Prinsloo and Arnold Tanzer, highly respected members of the industry, from a shortlist submitted by 27 national restaurant reviewers.

According to Eat Out, the judges visited each nominated restaurant unannounced to evaluate the ability of the chefs and restaurants to create "that special experience that gives added pleasure to diners".
