Joburg set for dance explosion

South Africa's FNB Dance Umbrella celebrates its 19th year on the global dance map as a platform for new works from local and international companies.

The festival is on in Johannesburg from 17 February to 17 March, with shows at Constitution Hill, the Wits Theatre Complex and the new Johannesburg University Arts Centre.

International productions and collaborations on this year's programme include:

  • CounterCircles, a partnership between German choreographer Gerda Konig and Kenyan artist Ondiege Matthews, featuring disabled dancers from Germany and Kenya.
  • Wola Baba, created by South Africa's Via Katlehong and France's Back to Hip Hop.
  • emballe-moi (wrap me up), choreographed by Katarzyna Gdaniec and Marco Cantalupo from Switzerland's Company Linga.
  • Impro-Vise_2 by Senegal's Andréya Ouamba.
  • Os, a new work by French choreographer Pascal Montrouge.
  • Inside of Me Another Island by Panaibra Ganriel from Mozambique's Company CulturArte.
  • Cleaning, a collaboration between South Africa's Sifiso Kweyama and Gilbert Douglas from Zimbabwe.
The FNB Dance Umbrella also includes a Young Choreographers Residency Programme funded by the National Lottery Distribution Fund and the National Arts Council.

Tickets are available at the door or can be booked at Computicket, with prices ranging from R20 to R80, and concessions/block bookings and subscription tickets available.
