Pretoria to host photomarathon

20 August 2007

Local website PhotographySA.com is calling out to all photography enthusiasts to take part in the second South African photomarathon, which takes place in Pretoria on 8 September.

The competition is open to all photographers, with separate categories for those using digital and analogue cameras, to allow as many photographers as possible to participate.

According to PhotographySA.com, a photomarathon is an event typically lasting between 12 and 24 hours, during which participants have to take a series of photographs of predefined subjects or themes.

"The city of Pretoria has been selected for its unique dynamics and vibrancy and because of the large amount of active photographers and the relative lack of profiling opportunities for them," says PhotographySA.com in a statement this week.

The photomarathon will start on 8 September at 8am outside the Outlet Gallery situated on the Pretoria campus of the Tshwane University of Technology and will last for 12 hours.

Participants will receive four new themes at a new venue in downtown Pretoria every four hours and have to submit one photograph for each theme by 8pm the same day.

A professional jury will decide on the winning series and the winning photograph, with the winners announced at an exhibition of the works at the Outlet Gallery on 28 September.

For the first time, the competition organisers have partnered with another local website, MyVideo, to accept entries from videographers, who will have to submit 12 short video clips of 12 different themes within the 12 hours.

Each video can be no longer than one minute in length, and as with the photography category, there can be no post-processing.

Those wanting to take part in the video competition have to ensure they have an account with MyVideo, and enter their MyVideo user ID in their PhotographySA.com profile.

"After a very successful first photomarathon in Johannesburg earlier this year, we are extremely excited to bring this event to Pretoria," said PhotographySA.com director Babak Fakhamzadeh.

"This is an enormous opportunity for both up-and-coming and established photographers to compete in a singular event in downtown Pretoria."

The entry fee to the photomarathon is R50, though discounts are available for those who book early. Participants should register through the PhotographySA.com website.
