A Taste of South Africa: the CD

7 November 2003

Spear of the Nation, a Proudly South African company, has just released a 16-track CD of 75 minutes of narration, stories and poems about South Africa.

Titled "A Taste of South Africa", the compilation offers non-South Africans an insight into the country, while reminding citizens and those who have visited the country of the bravery and achievements of South Africans.

Narrated by Robin Binckes, the stories relate the history of South Africa from 1835 to 1993, spread a positive message about South Africans in an entertaining and informative way.

Binckes is passionate about South Africa and its people. Having spent most of his working life in public relations and marketing, he now conducts historical tours and talks to visitors from other countries as well as to locals.

He narrates the history of the Voortrekkers, the two Anglo-Boer wars, the discovery of gold, the rebellion of 1914, and Jan Smuts and his role in the First World War. He also paints a picture of the Afrikaaners' struggle to achieve independence from the English.

Next is the narration of stories about the struggle to achieve democracy for all our people: Nelson Mandela's early years in the Transkei, Alexandra, the growth of political activity, the tragedy of Sharpeville, the formation of Umkhonto WeSizwe, the Rivonia raid and subsequent trial.

Finally Benckes relates, with chilling description, the measures taken by the South African Police at the infamous Vlakplaas farm to crush the freedom movements.

The CD ends with a poem written by Olive Schreiner.

The CD provides an understanding of the different struggles experienced by the country's diverse people in the forging of a new South Africa. The department of foreign affairs has given the green light for distribution of the CD foreign embassies throughout the world.

"A Taste of South Africa" is available at leading bookstores and CD shops throughout South Africa. Or place orders by calling 083 395 7027 or e-mailing Spear of the Nation.

Companies who wish to order 300 or more copies can have them branded with their own company logo on the back of the CD with the track titles.
