Gauteng Community Safety MEC Firoz Cachalia has warned inept public servants that their callous behaviour towards the communities they serve will not be tolerated.
Speaking at the official opening of the Atteridgeville Multi Purpose Community Centre, west of Pretoria, of Friday, Cachalia urged the community to demand respect and efficient service from public servants.
"The community should not tolerate the kind of behaviour that is not Batho Pele driven. They must demand respect and efficient services from public servants. They are your servants because they are here to serve you," he said.
He urged the community to use the facilities at the MPCC to empower themselves with information so that they can take action in addressing the challenges of poverty and underdevelopment.
"If you have information you have the power to take action to better your situation," he said.
MPCCs are government's one-stop service centres, and serve
as a nerve centre for providing basic services such as welfare, birth registration, death and marriage certificates, social grants, labour, environmental and health services, paralegal services, and government information.
They are co-ordinated by the Government Communication and Information System.
The Atteridgeville MPCC is located at the corner of Komane and Mngadi streets within the mini-munitoria where municipal services can be accessed.
The new inclusion at the mini-munitoria will be the housing department where people can register for RDP houses, labour and home affairs department, the office of the public protector and a number of non-governmental organisations.
Through the department of provincial and local government, locals will be recruited to become Community Development Workers who will inform councillors about the plight of the community.
Clifford Legodi from the Gauteng Premier's office said the MPCC was housed at the mini-munitoria as
part of the provincial government's strategy to utilise existing municipal structures to integrate services in the area for effective service delivery.
The Atteridgeville MPCC is the 14th to be launched in the province and Cachalia said the government expected to have 40 such amenities in the province by 2009.
