South Africa will extend its deployment of troops in Burundi until March 2006 to help the Great Lakes country achieve full democracy.
The government has also approved the deployment of additional SA troops to strife-torn Sudan as part of an African Union mission in the north African country.
A Cabinet meeting in Pretoria on Thursday approved the troop deployments as part of South Africa's resolve to help the continent achieve peace and stability.
Deputy President Jacob Zuma is the facilitator of the peace process in Burundi.
Defence ministry spokesperson Sam Mkhwanazi confirmed that South Africa would increase its complement of about 185 personnel currently assisting in Sudan. He said a decision on the number of additional troops would be made soon.
