Carolus eyes new frontiers
31 August 2004
Cheryl Carolus, the vivacious face of South African Tourism - and one time South African High Commissioner in London - has resigned.
Carolus describes herself as a "frontiers person", and says that "with South African Tourism now on the right track, it's time to move on".
Carolus helped bring a new, research-led business model to the organisation, developed a strong leadership team, and was instrumental in leading efforts to develop the domestic tourism market.
She took up her three-year term as CEO in November 2001, immediately prior to which she was South African High Commissioner to London, a post she assumed in March 1998.
Rick Menell, chairman of the Board of South African Tourism, said Carolus' contract with the country's tourism marketing organisation expires at the end of October 2004.
"It is with regret that we have accepted this decision", Menell said. "Cheryl has made a tremendous contribution during the rebuilding
phase at South African Tourism. I have no doubt that we can find a leader to succeed her who will make an equally strong contribution during the next phase of the organisation’s growth."
Between now and Carolus' departure, South African Tourism will be actively looking for a replacement. "In the interim", Menall said, "it's most definitely business as usual."
Carolus said there was nothing mysterious about her departure. "South African Tourism is now in a very good space, and I feel I have achieved what I set out to do, so it is time to move on. I have no current plans except to take some time out - and then see what 2005 brings!"
